We recently presented cheques to Action Mental Health & Autism NI – our two nominated charities for 2016. The total amount raised was £4,225, hopefully going some way in helping these worthwhile causes to continue their good work in Northern Ireland. Various events were held throughout the year including a car wash on site at Banbridge, Giants Causeway Coast Sportive, abseil down the Europa Hotel & Christmas Jumper Day. Furthermore, our supply chain partners gave generously in lieu of gifts at Christmas. Thank you to all who contributed throughout the year!
Looking forward to 2017, our chosen charity is Air Ambulance NI & we already have an array of exciting fundraising events planned. We’ll keep you up-to-date on our website & social media platforms!
Following our success at the Construction Excellence Awards with Ballymisert Supported Housing, the scheme continues to pick up prestigious accolades in recognition of its excellence. The scheme was recently named “Best UK Social Housing Scheme” & “Best Sustainable Residential Supported Housing Scheme” at the 2016 “Build” Sustainable Building Awards. The awards are focused on rewarding the efforts of firms who have helped shape the works of eco-friendly & sustainable buildings across the globe.
Kaven Cooper, Awards Co-ordinator, said: “With these awards, we pay tribute to the outstanding firms who are dedicated to supporting the environment and all those who live in it. I am proud to be able to turn the spotlight on these exemplary firms and would like to wish them continued success in the future.”

We were delighted to win the Social Housing Award for Ballymisert Supported Housing at the 2016 Construction Excellence Awards, held in the Culloden Hotel on 6th October. Ballymisert is a purpose-built supported housing scheme, providing state-of-the-art accommodation for 21 residents with mental health needs. The development also features offices/staff accommodation & a common room – designed to promote social interaction amongst residents. The housing is set within a beautifully landscaped site, providing further opportunities for recreation.
Ballymisert was designed & delivered with its future residents at the heart of every decision made. Medical & construction experts (including our supply chain partners) joined forces, working together from inception to completion to optimise best outturn. Their collaborative endeavour resulted in a state-of-the-art facility which has been revered as a phenomenal success by both Triangle, Beacon & the families/friends of those now resident there.
Well done to all those who contributed to the success of this scheme!
Representatives from ICE Northern Ireland recently met with project partners to unveil a ‘This is Civil Engineering’ banner at the site of the future Whiterock Community Corridor in West Belfast. The project, currently being constructed by Donaghmore Construction Ltd, will provide facilities that benefit the local community including a public amenities area, MUGA pitch, playground & improved accessibility from Whiterock Road to Falls Park.
Due to be completed this October, the project is intended to increase community activity & participation by developing a previously unusable area. The landscaped, open space will feature gardens, seating, footpaths & lighting. In addition, the new playground has the potential to benefit up to 2,000 local children.
“The project is important for the regeneration of the area,” said Donaghmore Construction Contracts Manager Niall Smith. “The reduction of the fencing spec gives the perception of normality, rather than the high-security fencing which was previously present.”
ICE Regional Director Richard Kirk said that the Corridor is a shining example of how infrastructure can improve quality of life for both individuals & communities. “The transformation of a derelict lot to an area that conveys a sense of welcoming & safety is civil engineering at its finest,” Richard said. “This is what the campaign is all about – showing how our profession benefits society.”

Saturday 10th September was a busy day in DCL’s social calendar, with our teams taking part in 2 charity fundraising activities.
Robert Montgomery & Niall Devlin both took on the Giants Causeway Coast Sportive – cycling a combined distance of 183km around the beautiful north Antrim coast! The route included the infamous Torr Head Road, with some epic climbs & hair-raising descents!
At the same time, Sarah White, Martin McCann, Gavin Teague & Mark Currie were undertaking an abseil down the Europa Hotel in Belfast. Not one for the faint hearted, this involved an eye-watering descent of 167 feet!
Well done to all our staff members who took part! We are actively raising much-needed funds for Action Mental Health & Autism NI – two local charities doing fantastic work throughout the province. Keep checking back for details of further events throughout the year.
Off the back of our success at the Irish Green Apple Awards in May, we were delighted to receive a Bronze Award at the International Green Apple Awards for the Built Environment & Architectural Heritage. These Awards are an annual campaign to recognise, reward & promote environmental best practice around the world. We collected our award on 8th August at a ceremony held in The Crystal London, the world’s most sustainable events venue! This is yet another accolade for our approach to sustainability on Gort Beag, a social housing project comprising 10 homes on Rathlin Island for Apex Housing Association.
We’re thrilled to be shortlisted in 3 categories at this years Construction Excellence Awards! Ballymisert Supported Housing heads up the social housing finalists, whilst Fairfields competes with the elite in the private housing world. Our ongoing commitment to training has also been recognised with a spot on the training award shortlist. We look forward to welcoming the judges to our head office & sites over the summer months. The winners will be announced at a gala dinner event on 6th October 2016. Further information on the awards can be found here
